Girl Scouts of Southwestern Pennsylvania
14,200 square foot environmental learning center
In the fall of 1997, the GSSWPA broke ground for an environmental learning
center on their heavily forested 800 acre rural site in Northern West Virginia. This
building is the feature component of a master plan that includes two troop cabins, an
access road, hiking trails, a small lake and several primitive camping sites.Carefully
sited to take advantage of sunlight, views, topography and existing hardwoods, the center
provides for a range of study and meeting activities and is equipped with a commercial
kitchen and dormitory space for twelve. Intended to be a working laboratory with many
sustainable features expressed within the architecture, the center utilizes a geothermal
heating system, composting toilets, straw bale walls, natural ventilation and many
resource efficient materials.
